Steel Magnolias Submission Requirements The Majestic Theatre invites local artists and members of the community to drop off one work of art to be hung in our South Lobby Gallery as part of our exhibit. There is no entry fee or jury process. Simply bring an original work that meets the requirements below and we will display your piece.
Artwork must be 100% ready to hang or display with quality hanging mechanism (no sawtooth hangers or frames with stands on the back; eye hooks and wire are ideal). We do not frame artwork. Artwork (including frame) must be 9” wide x 12” high or smaller and weigh less 15 pounds. One (1) art piece per artist. Artwork must be dropped off and picked up during the designated times. We do not store artwork. Artwork must be accompanied by a completed submission form. Artwork must be relevant to the theme. For Steel Magnolias, we are only accepting works that represent some aspect of the play. For example: the color pink, anything related to hair salons, women (friendship, support, nurturing), fashion & hair from the 80’s.
As added inspiration, here’s some insight from the play’s director, Leigh Matthews Bock:
STEEL MAGNOLIAS The funniest show to make you cry.
Set in a Louisiana beauty shop in the time of really big hair, a multigenerational collection of unlikely friends gather to pamper or to be pampered. There they share friendship, loss and eventually new beginnings and each comes away with perfectly coiffed hair and emotional solace. Immersed with humor and tinged with tragedy, Steel Magnolias, reminds us that howling in laughter with sharp-witted girlfriends makes us all stronger and life oh so much better.
I also love this quote – I think it speaks to the show very well.
A good friend is a connection to life — a tie to the past, a road to the future, the key to sanity in a totally insane world. ~ Lois Wyse
Please contact Maureen Frank (mfrank@peak.org) or Gabriela Oh (gallery@majestic.org), if you have any questions about the requirements.
